Graham Simpson has dedicated over four decades to criminal defence practice and is one of the most experienced practitioners within the firm. With more than 40 years of continuous
Involvement in criminal litigation, he brings a depth of knowledge, perspective, and practical insight that only extensive courtroom experience can provide.
Throughout his career, Graham has practised predominantly in criminal defence and has served as Senior Partner in a number of established firms across Greater Manchester. He was among the very first solicitors to be enrolled onto the Duty Solicitor Scheme when it was formally introduced in 1986 — a testament to his long-standing commitment to frontline criminal defence representation.
Over the course of his career, Graham has represented clients across the full spectrum of criminal allegations. His caseload has ranged from summary-only matters in the Magistrates’ Courts to the most serious indictable offences heard before the Crown Court. He has acted in cases involving murder, large-scale importation of controlled substances, complex drug supply conspiracies, serious violence, and other grave and high-profile allegations. His experience spans both legally and evidentially complex trials, often involving extensive disclosure, expert evidence, and multi-handed defendants.
Graham’s career has developed alongside the modern criminal justice system. He has
witnessed and worked through significant structural and procedural changes, including the evolution of the Crown Prosecution Service from its early proximity to police stations, through regional centralisation, and beyond. His insight into the shifting landscape of prosecution policy, court procedure, and criminal litigation strategy allows him to approach cases with a uniquely informed and measured perspective. He is regularly instructed in matters before courts across England and Wales and maintains personal involvement in the cases he conducts. His representation frequently spans from the initial investigative stage through to jury trials in the Crown Court, ensuring continuity of strategy and client support throughout proceedings.
Within Tyler Hoffman Solicitors, Graham is regarded as a cornerstone of the criminal
defence team. His extensive experience provides invaluable mentorship to junior lawyers, who benefit from his practical courtroom knowledge, case analysis skills, and advocacy guidance. His presence within the firm strengthens both the technical capability and the strategic depth of the Crown Court department.
Graham’s longevity in practice reflects not only experience but resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to criminal defence. His career stands as a reflection of dedication to protecting the rights of individuals within an evolving and often demanding criminal justice system.
